Located in a former Community Center in the Woodfin suburb of Asheville, this building had seen a variety of uses from community gatherings to auto salvage and evidence storage for local law enforcement departments. With a limited budget and differing support amongst local agencies, this project afforded the opportunity to build a coalition of stakeholders that included School Directors, Code Enforcement Officials, the Fire Marshal, and the Town Manager to inform and navigate challenges associated with a change of occupancy and life safety improvements to an aging facility. From its humble beginnings as an under utilized community space, the facility now houses a thriving Montessori School program and has served as an example of the power of public and private collaboration.
